Heute war der zweite Teil der Mitgliederversammlung des HSV, auf der es u.a. um die Anträge zur Fernwahl und Verkleinerung des Aufsichtsrats gehen sollte und ging. Meine Meinung dazu schreibe ich vielleicht später auf, aber vorher möchte ich etwas anderes, viel grundlegenderes festhalten:

Zu Höchstzeiten waren heute um die 580 stimmberechtigte Mitglieder anwesend. Der Verein hat insgesamt 71.000 Mitglieder, von denen sind wohl um die 53.000 stimmberechtigt, wenn ich das heute alles richtig verstanden habe. Das heißt, jeglicher Beschluss dieser Veranstaltung fußt auf dem Votum von knapp 1% der Mitgliedschaft. Wer kann sich anhand dieser Zahlen ernsthaft legitimiert fühlen etwas umzusetzen? Das ist noch nicht mal eine statistisch relevante Größe, dafür bräuchte es mindestens 10, wenn nicht gar 20% der Mitglieder.
Es wurden eine Vielzahl von Satzungsänderungen beschlossen. Häufig ging es dabei um das Entfernen von Kommata, Klammern und/oder dem Feinschliff an vereinzelten Formulierungen. Das ist legitime und wichtige Arbeit. Über die Entfernung von Kommata von knapp 500 Mitgliedern abstimmen zu lassen entbehrt nicht einer gewissen Komik und sagt vielleicht mehr über den Zustand des HSV im Jahr 2012 aus als vieles andere. Wenn man aber bedenkt, dass theoretisch das ganze Stadion mit stimmberechtigten Mitgliedern hätte gefüllt werden können, dann muss man zu der Erkenntnis kommen, dass der HSV nicht mehr zeitgemäß organisiert ist. Für solche Themen sollte es Fachgremien geben (und gibt es offensichtlich auch, irgendwo müssen diese Vorschläge ja herkommen), über die Richtigkeit der von diesen Gremien erarbeiteten Vorschläge sollen dann die Abteilungsleitungen, der Vorstand oder meinetwegen auch der Aufsichtsrat entscheiden.
Die aktuelle Art der Entscheidungsfindung mag für den Kegelverein um die Ecke funktionieren, aber sie skaliert einfach nicht auf die Dimensionen in denen sich der HSV bewegt, sowohl was die Menge der Mitglieder als auch die finanziellen Größenordnungen betrifft. Wer diesen Zustand dann auch noch “beneidenswerte Vereinskultur” nennt, der lügt sich selber in die Tasche und verkennt das der HSV auf dem besten Weg ist sich sein eigenes Grab zu schaufeln.
Es gab eine für mich bezeichnende Abstimmung. Der Vorstand kann zu gewissen Themen die das Gelände in Ochsenzoll betreffen nicht mehr frei entscheiden, sondern muss sich seine Vorhaben von der Mitgliederversammlung genehmigen lassen. Konkret ging es um die Eintragung einer Grundschuld auf das Gelände, um die Baumaßnahmen zu finanzieren. Da wurde “von ein paar Millionen” gesprochen, der Sachverhalt wurde kaum erläutert und dann kam es zur Abstimmung. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren nur noch knapp über 300 Leute da und sie stimmten auch zu. Aber kaum einer wird wirklich verstanden haben worum es bei dem Antrag ging und was das für Konsequenzen hat. Das ist eine reine Alibi-Abstimmung gewesen, die niemandem nutzt. Der Vorstand kann das machen was er sowieso wollte, musste aber einen unnötigen Umweg gehen. Die Mitglieder haben keine nennenswerten Mehr-Informationen bekommen und einen Antrag, der die meisten wahrscheinlich nicht interessierte, einfach durchgewunken. So etwas braucht keiner und so einen Quatsch sollte man auch schnell wieder aus der Satzung streichen. Auch hier wieder: Solche Vorhaben sollten intern von Fachleuten diskutiert und beschlossen werden, aber nicht vor einigen Hundert Pappnasen (und da schließe ich mich selbst ein). Das ist schlicht der falsche Ort für solche Themen. Wer das nicht einsieht wird den HSV bald an einem falschen Ort, nämlich der 2. Liga wiederfinden.

The last two paragraphs hit the nail on the head in my opinion:

Yeah, conditions for factory workers in China are pretty much bad across the board. Yeah, Foxconn is probably better than some of its competitors, and Apple is better than some other companies about taking responsibility for its supply chain. But tell me you have nearly $100 billion in cash and liquid assets on hand and you know what? I think you can do better. I think Duhigg and Barboza have a point about cutting supplier margins to make more profit. I think you can afford to take a more active interest in what your supply chain is doing, and to use those impressive negotiating tactics to improve the lives of the people making your devices.

And I think you’re not the only ones who can do that.

So tech industry, it’s time to step up and take care of your people. Fanboys and girls, it’s time to step down even when you know an article has a slant that’s not completely fair. All of us need to accept that there is a human cost to our devices, and we need to accept that the human cost doesn’t have to be as high as it is. And then we need to demand better.

I was making some updates to my iTunes library when my eyes somehow landed on the status bar at the bottom, where it shows you how much content you have in your library. The amount of content I have amassed over the years is kind of stunning (and also a good symbol of my OCD tendencies).

So, what do these numbers look like?

Music: 4,304 songs, total playing time of 12 days, 9 hours, 10 minutes (and 2 seconds)
Movies: 79 movies, total playing time of 5.7 days
TV Shows: 93 (seasons of) TV shows, total playing time 38.2 days
Apps: 85 total, 28 universal (iPhone + iPad), 33 iPhone, 24 iPad
Books: 5, though only two were purchased, the other three were free

All told, my iTunes folder comes in at 1.06 TB of data that is stored (and mirrored) on a dedicated NAS device (again… OCD!). And that’s not only a lot of data, but also a lot of money, as most of that content was actually legally acquired. In other words: I need a(nother) hobby.

How the internet works

In response to a bill currently discussed by the US Congress, this article was written, its main point being the willful (and gleeful) ignorance of the people voting on this bill. It’s a good read if you want to know how far removed politicians have become from reality (not just in the US).

The article includes a video explaining how the internet came to be and how DNS works. It’s a funny little video, produced by DNSMadeEasy.com, but if I were a customer of theirs, I’d be scared shitless. Because when they get to the point of how computers connect via IP addresses, they use this graphic (click to enlarge):

Back in my agency days, I sat through a meeting where something similar happened: One person trying to explain IP addresses with out-of-range numbers. That was funny (yet cringeworthy), because we can’t really expect media planners to know about how IP works (honestly, we can’t/shouldn’t expect media planners to know how anything works, but that’s for another day)… but I do expect a company whose business it is to sell DNS related products and solutions to know that the highest number an IP octet can have is 255. If you’re going to use IP addresses ending in .910 or beginning with 728. (just two of the many examples) while mocking other people for describing the internet as “a series of tubes”, you’re nothing but a jackass. You’re a jackass that should go out of business, because you don’t seem to understand one of the most basic parts of the service you claim to be providing.

At the very least, you ought to fire your marketing department (who are most likely responsible for the video), because that mistake is embarrassing (in all honesty, you probably know how IP works and did spot this mistake before uploading, but were informed the cost of re-doing it wasn’t worth it “since nobody’s gonna notice anyway”)
